The Washington Polo Community, The Corporate Sector and The Philanthropic Community Come Together To Support The First African American Polo Program Designed to Help At-Risk Youth

Summer Swing Under the Stars hosted by The Courage Cup's Leadership Committee

(Washington, D.C.) – On June 18, 2009, The Leadership Committee of The Courage Cup will host Summer Swing Under the Stars at AKA White House, 1710 H Street, NW, Washington, D.C. 20006. This event brings together the Washington Polo community, The Corporate Sector and the Philanthropic Community to support Work to Ride, the First African-American polo program designed to help at-risk urban youth. The Work to Ride program provides disadvantaged urban youth with constructive activities centered around horsemanship, equine sports, and education.

Summer Swing Under the Stars will feature music performed by DC Swing! band and will be held on the rooftop of AKA White House, the new luxury division of Korman Communities, which sponsored The Courage Cup's 2008 Meadow Matches event. Complimentary heavy hors d'ouevres will be provided by Entree Metropolitan, and Barefoot Wine & Bubbly will provide champagne.

Due to the current economy, The Courage Cup has decided not to host Meadow Matches this year, but the event is expected to return in 2010. "Especially in this time of economic insecurity, many may question why the children are taught to ride horses and play polo.  They do not understand that the children in the Work to Ride program enjoy riding and working with horses, and benefit from being a part of a program which supports them, encourages them, and teaches the skills they need to succeed in life. Through the program they learn teamwork, a strong work ethic, passion, goal setting, and they are required to keep their grades up in school. As with many other sports, polo gives these children lessons in life," said Andrea Rodgers, CEO and Chairwoman of The Courage Cup.

Stephanie Baucus, a member of The Courage Cup's Leadership Committee said, "When I first heard of The Courage Cup, I wondered how polo could be accessible for anyone living in a city, let alone teenagers.  Since learning more about the program and getting to know those involved, I have come to see this program as a great example of how there is truly no formula for helping to make a difference in children's lives.  Any positive mentorship, training programs, and compassionate attention can make a difference, and this program truly does."

"We hope that Summer Swing Under the Stars will not only raise a great deal of money, but that it will also highlight the importance of programs designed to give at-risk youth a positive after-school activity, such as the Work to Ride program. The Courage Cup has recently expanded its mission to include the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Washington, and Loudon Do Something Now as beneficiaries. We're excited about helping many more kids, and helping kids who are right here in the Greater Washington community. Our Leadership Committee looks forward to working with these new beneficiaries and to hosting Meadow Matches, the grand summer polo event that is enjoyed by so many again next year,” said Andrea Rodgers, President and CEO of the Courage Cup.

Tickets cost $30 per person, and benefit The Courage Cup,  an IRS designated 501(c) (3) non-profit corporation which was established to help at-risk urban youth. We support programs in the mid-Atlantic region which give disadvantaged children individualized attention and a positive alternative activity to keep them in school and off the streets.

About The Courage Cup
The Courage Cup raises money to benefit programs in the mid-Atlantic region that give disadvantaged children individualized attention and a positive alternative activity to keep them in school and off the streets.  The Courage Cup supports Inner City Outings in Washington, DC and Work to Ride in Philadelphia, PA.

About Work to Ride

Created in 1994 by Lezlie Hiner, Work to Ride is a non-profit, providing disadvantaged urban youth from Philadelphia with constructive activities centered around horsemanship, equine sports, and education. Located in Fairmount Park, the setting provides a unique opportunity to bring 7-to 19-year-old youth in contact with animals and nature.

In 1999, the Work to Ride polo team became the first African American polo team in the nation, and in 2005 the team won the Eastern Regional Interscholastic Polo tournament. The program has been featured in Sports Illustrated, and was twice highlighted on HBO’s “Real Sports”.
