The Business and Nonprofit Philanthropy Summit and Awards are this week and First Lady Michelle Obama will keynote the event. Greater DC Cares to convene 350 Nonprofit and Business Leaders to focus on Philanthropy, Volunteerism and Community Service Impact
2009 Business and Non-Profit Philanthropy Awards Finalists Announced
Washington DC – June 8, 2009: Greater DC Cares, the largest and leading coordinator of volunteerism in the Greater Washington Region is co-hosting the Business and Nonprofit Philanthropy Summit and Awards with Washington Post Media. The Summit will convene business, nonprofit and community leaders to recognize excellence in community service and philanthropy, exchange ideas, share promising practices, and develop stronger partnerships to better impact the region during this extraordinary economic time.
The event features many notable leaders including Pulitzer Prize winner Eugene Robinson, Barbara Krumsiek, President and CEO of Calvert Investments Ltd, and Dr. Margaret McKenna, President, Wal-Mart Foundation. "At the Wal-Mart Foundation, we know we have a responsibility to support those hit hardest by the financial crisis, but we also recognize that it's not just financial donations that make a difference," said Margaret McKenna, president of the Wal-Mart Foundation. "By working together, volunteers can respond to the needs of their own communities by giving of their time and skills. Help comes in many forms and we can all contribute in some way."
The Summit and Awards Luncheon will bring over 350 cross-sector executives together on June 16, 2009 at the Washington Renaissance Hotel in Washington, DC. The event is being sponsored by Capital One, Fannie Mae, Wal-Mart, Meyer Foundation, United Way of the National Capital Area, Deloitte LLP, CareFirst, TerpSys and others regionally focused businesses and organizations.
Greater DC Cares, along with a panel of judges from business, nonprofit and community leaders has selected the 2009 finalists for the Business & Nonprofit Philanthropy Summit and Awards. The award winners will be announced at the Awards Luncheon, emceed by ABC 7/WJLA-TV anchor Maureen Bunyan.
Greater DC Cares is honoring businesses and nonprofits that demonstrate outstanding support to the region. “This year, there were several qualified organizations nominated that truly have strengthened and served the region through their exceptional service and philanthropy. What set the finalists apart from other organizations was the positive impact that they had on the region and their own internal organizations,” said Dr. Madye Henson, President and CEO of Greater DC Cares.
