On June 20th, Fletcher Gill, co-founder of Luke’s Wings, hosted a reception aboard U.S.S. Sequoia Presidential Yacht to honor wounded soldiers and corporate sponsors. Kate Marie Grinold, Miss DC 2008-2009, was mistress of ceremonies and special guest speaker Command Sergeant Major (Ret) Michele Jones provided words of encouragement to all in attendance. The weather was almost perfect for a cruise and the evening sunset was a gorgeous backdrop for the occasion.
The yacht was a reminder of not just the good life, but also military life aboard a water vessel. The soldiers that were wounded on combat were full of life and smiles with plenty of stories to tell in commanding voices. CSM Jones certainly captured our attention with her speech to keep things positive and moving forward. Luke’s Wings provides the opportunity to bring fly the families of wounded soldiers to places like Walter Reed which provides a peace of mind to the solider during the holding and healing process. Seeing the sponsors and a few of the soldiers in the same setting really brought it home just how Luke’s Wings can make an impact. A very different event from Fashion Takes Flight! A wonderful thanks to Nicole Siobal, Alicia Lewis and all volunteers for their role in making the Presidential Yacht reception unforgettable.
