Grab this! SECTR 24 is the latest music talent on the streets and their new EP, “A Tattooed Melody” is out today, Dec 16th. Get it on iTunes, www.itunes.com/sectr24. Ross Lara and Stephen Coleman take your listening skills on a ride of hip-hop, electronica, piano, vocals and rap you up in the experience of their journey. DC nightlife talent DJ Neekola passed on their information and I had the pleasure of doing an interview with Ross. When music is always changing and artists are looking for ways to keep the pace SECTR 24 is setting the beat to a new bass line. Their style and mix of genres encompasses what music is about: a universal language that reaches you on different levels of expression played out by your own unique emotions at that given moment in time.
A unique life situation brought Stephen and Ross together to collaborate on their music. The loss of a friend provoked inspiration to create life rather than dissipate in grief. Ross, age 22, has been DJing for 12 years, he brings the pump and experience of dealing with mixing sounds and creating a total atmosphere to move a crowd. Stephen, age 17, is finishing school on top of creating the music that defines his time. They worked together for about a year on “A Tattooed Melody” among other projects and are active with use of social media and shows to keep the talent and followers thriving!
On first listen to the tracks a few weeks ago it was obvious they had their own style. If you look at the faces it would be tragically stereotypical to say, “Here we go again with a couple ‘o white boys trying to
rap like they are Eminem or something.” Not in this case, so open your mind. SECTR 24 brings you melody and easy going sounds layered with scratching, and heart lyrics in the track “Navy Blue.” Then they switch to the hip-hop, in your face style of cutting adult lyrics mixed with a low electronic piano sound that reminds me of the slick downside of Tupac. Just when you think you are pumped up to go Ross and Stephen bring you to the moment of reflection with “Golden Heart Symphony” that plays out like a perfect chill trance piece with the fusion of symphony presentation. The arrangement of the music and the tracks on the album will take you across any experience you could have in one day and fits right into the mix next to Linkin Park, Lil Wayne and BT. SECTR 24 is a rising star of young artistic talent jet setting the genres of music for the masses and “A Tattooed Melody” is only the beginning.
When asked what it will mean when this album hits the streets?
Ross: “It will mean diversity of genres which is strong on this album. We had a chance to emotionally express ourselves. It brings in personal experiences architecturally, musically and lyrically.”
Nightlife PR: What is your favorite song on this album?
Ross: “If I had to pick one it would be Love Dezine. They all mean different things, but Love Dezine is most influential. The lyrics ‘You’re my uncovery, You’re my discovery’ are phenomenal to express when looking back. I also love the marching band sound at the end of the track! And I have to add I love the second track ‘SECTR Debut’ because of the programming style and lyrically this track is SICK!”
Nightlife PR: Where did you get the name SECTR 24?
Ross: “Its really an awesome mix of words that define us and the music. The S is for Sine, as in sine/cosine because of the use of sine waves and deep bass lines; The E is for Edward which happens to be part of the name for both Stephen and I; C for cosine, T for tangent, R for Ross. The 24 represents the memory of a friend.”
Nightlife PR: With such a diverse sound, how will you present the music to people on tour?
Ross: “We are doing a full band show! There will be piano, vocals, rapping and we will play live, no DJ set just playing the tracks.”
Ross is currently in Florida while Stephen is in Iowa and nothing stops these guys from creating their work and getting together to put on a few shows. The DMV will get not one, but, four chances to groove with SECTR 24! Their first tour date for the new album will start at Jammin Java in Virginia on January 5th, 2010 and the DC show at MUSE lounge on January 15th, 2010.
About SECTR 24
"We are all about fusing multiple genres with synth programming and memorable melodies," Stephen Coleman enthusiastically states. "Ross and I started writing together when his best friend passed away in 2006. Commemorating the two year anniversary of his passing, we collaborated as SECTR 24 on what is now our first song, "Golden Heart Symphony," and we knew then that we need to make more music together.
